A HIDDEN HISTORY:
African Women and the
British Health Service
1930–2000
Episode 1: A Hidden History: Early 20th Century Women in British Healthcare, 1900-1949
This documentary episode is the first in a series by the Young Historians Project, which seeks to recover the hidden history of African women in Britain, and their longstanding connections and contributions to the British healthcare system. This episode explores key early 20th century figures including Agnes Savage, the first African woman to earn a medical degree from the University of Edinburgh, and Princess Tsehai Selassie of Ethiopia, who trained as a Children's Nurse at Great Ormond Street Hospital, whilst exiled here in Britain in the 1930s.
